Microkernel

Hybrid Kernel

Definition: Combines aspects of both monolithic and microkernel. Some services in kernel space, some in user space. Often uses kernel modules for extensibility.

Exokernel

Definition: Minimal kernel that only provides secure multiplexing of hardware. Applications manage their own abstractions (file systems, memory management).

Characteristics:

  • Extremely minimal kernel
  • Applications have direct hardware access (with security)
  • No forced abstractions
  • Maximum performance, maximum complexity for applications
